Dr Nick Williams and John Rayner from The University of Melbourne are attempting to close the various knowledge gaps on green roof construction in Australia by conducting research into the types of plants and substrates that will survive in the unique Melbourne climate. The research, being carried out at the University's Burnley campus, is part of the first comprehensive research project on green roof technology in Australia. The scientists are already investigating which drought-tolerant, shallow rooted natives may survive in the unique hot, dry and windy conditions on a roof top.
