What are green roofs?

Green roofs are vegetated roofs grown in roof-top planting systems which will usually include growing media, a protective waterproofing and drainage layer. Green roofs are permanent and significantly cover a building’s roof. There are many terms to describe a green roof including vegetated roofs, eco roofs, roof top gardens, living roofs and sky gardens.

Green roofs can provide a range of environmental, social and economic benefits and for these reasons, are increasing in popularity throughout the world, and are quite prominent in North American, Europe and parts of Asia.

Some green roofs are designed principally for recreation, while others simply sit above a building and are not accessible except for occasional maintenance requirements.

Why does Melbourne need green roofs?

In an attempt to find viable solutions to address climate change in Melbourne, green roofs have emerged as a mechanism by which we can begin to adapt and increase resilience to climate variability. Green roofs are a healthy, sustainable and regenerative means by which our ‘roofscape’ can help protect the environment.

However, green roofs are more than just a response to climate change; they offer green relief in the built environment, and offer tangible benefits to residents, employers and employees alike.

By reducing energy costs, increasing the value of buildings (including rentals and resale) and providing more green spaces in our city, there is strong argument for the promotion and adoption of green roofs, particularly as property occupancy in Melbourne expands.

Where else are green roofs used?

While Australia seems to have largely overlooked the benefits of green roofs over the past 30 years, Germany, New York, Hong Kong, Chicago, Michigan and London have become leaders of the green roof movement: taking advantage of reduced inner-city temperatures, greater building insulation and mitigated stormwater run-off.

How much do green roofs cost?

Green roof costs vary depending on the size of the roof, the depth of the planting and the species and materials used in the installation.

How many green roofs are in Melbourne?

We have several rooftop (intensive) gardens with lush plantings and trees in Melbourne, including Crown Casino, CH2 and Freshwater Place (residential) which have large accessible roofs designed to provide an interactive experience.
